Due to the resorts extreme popularity, the population over the summer period reaches in excess of half a million people. The island has an area that covers 38.5 km2 and a population density of 1,593,56 inhab/ km2.
Benidorm has three major beaches including; Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas which are all recognised by the European Union as being areas of very high quality standards, so much so that they were offered a Blue Flag from the EU. Like New York, Benidorm also features many tall building, some reaching in excess of 35m high which is why it has claimed to be the next city after New York with the largest number of sky scrapers in the world. For example, the 4* Gran Hotel Bali located in the Levante area, towers at an impressive 186m high and is one of the largest buildings in Europe.
